Shellac is a natural resin that we use to make shellac varnish with which we polish furniture. It is a polish developed by the French in the 18th century to highlight the surfaces of inlaid furniture.

The woods that formed the inlays were rosewood, bois de rose, ebony and many other wonderful exotic essences. The master cabinetmakers needed a varnish that penetrated the wood and showed all its beauty.

Shellac polishing has precisely this function, to make the shellac penetrate the pore of the wood. The light does not stop on the surface (as happens with modern synthetic paints) but penetrates the wood showing the veins, marbling, roots and feathers.
